The Academy Shapes the People Who Shape Culture
Universities train future teachers, researchers, writers, and civic leaders. Their ideas move downstream into classrooms, churches, public institutions, and everyday life.
When Christian scholars who are committed to cultivate what is true, pursue what is good, and create what is beautiful have a voice in the academy, culture at the highest levels is influenced.
Two Trends Converge During the Formative Years
Eighty-five percent of Americans who leave their childhood religion do so by age 30. The college and graduate years are a critical season of spiritual formation.
At the same time, the academic environment grows more secular at higher levels. Atheist or agnostic faculty make up about 15 percent at community colleges, 23.5 percent at non-elite doctoral universities, and 36.6 percent at elite doctoral universities. At elite doctoral universities, the share reporting no doubt that God exists falls to 20.4 percent.
Three Gaps Keep Promising Scholars From Flourishing
Christian voices remain scarce in the academy, especially at advanced levels and elite institutions. Students often enter graduate programs without mentors or peers who share their faith and academic calling.
Without a clear pathway and support network, gifted scholars often stop short of long-term academic service.
